About Me
My name is Angie Cummings and I am a teacher in Muskogee, Oklahoma. I work for a very progressive school district, the best in the state, in my opinion. I love to read and a big part of my job is teaching students how to enrich their reading skills. All too often, I am told by students “I hate reading”. With all of the competition to reading such as television, movies, video games, the internet, etc., it’s no wonder children think they hate to read. Most have forgotten, or never known, the fun of reading and the power it holds.
My goal is to teach them how much fun it is to read, how to use their imaginations to become part of the story, to be the main character or any other, to go places in their minds they may never go in real life.
So many times they don’t realize this movie they think is so great was adapted from an even greater book. I encourage them to go back and read the book and find out the details the movie left out, or to find the differences between the movie and the book. My classroom walls are lined with posters of movies that were books first.
This site is created to host book reviews and other information about books. Please enjoy and don’t hesitate to comment.
About Accelerated Reader (AR)
Accelerated Reader is a program used in many school districts to encourage young readers, to allow teachers and parents to monitor the progress of their students, and to identify problems early so more students can be helped.
Accelerated Reader, by Renaissance Learning, provides tests to the schools for the purpose of evaluating the students’ progress. Each book they have a test for is assigned points based upon the difficulty level and other criteria.
I have listed the grade level of the books along with the Accelerated Reader points available for students taking the quiz. The grade levels and points are current as of the posting date of the review.
